Six Rounds, Five Apps and No Participation Trophies

A while back, short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity. By Sensor Tower’s count, worldwide in-app revenue for the category came to about $700M in Q1 2025, and 49% of it came from the US. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M, while full-year 2025 ended up at roughly $2.8–3B. ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave are the five names that dominate the conversation, and any shopper www.reelshorts.org/where-to-watch/the-inimitable-grand-duke who has searched a store for a short reels app has met at least one of them. On the surface, the apps look identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Look underneath, though, and they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that affect what you pay and where you can watch. Over six rounds, we named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Head-to-Head Grid

The entire field fits on one screen here, before the rounds start. All prices reflect the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. For market share, the figures are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We pulled install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so wherever no reliable source published the figure, the cell says “not reported”. See the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Ownership and Scale

The incumbent is ReelShort, and it continues to carry the most weight. Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and supported by China’s COL Group, launched it in August 2022, and MPA gives it about 29% of the market outside China. MPA also pegs 2025 revenue for the app at $785M and projects $1.05B for 2026. Holding about 21%, DramaBox went live in April 2023 and is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, per Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, and DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave (often mistyped as “dreamwave”) is the youngest app here, but it already holds about 13%, and reportedly its annualized revenue topped $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax appears to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture’s ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. For context, GoodShort holds about 6% and sits just outside this group. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: What It Costs

In this round, the apps appear most alike. On the US App Store, ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at roughly $19.99, and each one renews automatically. In addition, ShortMax lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. DramaBox takes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99 is the standout, as it is the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, meaning a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, thanks to a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Country, platform and promotion all change prices, so the number on your screen may be different.

Round 3: Free Viewing Options

When it comes to free viewing, the marketing gets loud and the details grow thin. The first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, according to ReelShort’s own blog, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Free options exist on DramaBox too, though its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Round winner: ReelShort, clearly.

Round 4: Screens and Platforms

Screens are where these apps genuinely part ways. iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android are all covered by ReelShort, which also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. ShortMax offers web browsing too, since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website. DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app, while DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. My Drama plays the trump card, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Need nothing more than a shorts app on your phone? Any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, but My Drama takes the living room.

Round 5: Libraries and Original Series

On raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. As of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, and most of them were dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly relies on AI for more than 80% of its newly released content. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama has the most interesting pipeline, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, simply on volume.

Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print

Here, DramaWave runs away with it. Its App Store listing lists offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. For anyone switching between phone and laptop, ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk. The fine print deserves a look too, because it varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms state that refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”; My Drama, for its part, forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Always cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Winner: DramaWave, with room to spare.

Best For: Our Final Picks

How you watch decides the best choice, since no single short drama app takes every round. For Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. When it comes to web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan, DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. Best for backing the current revenue leader is DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Tempted by all five? Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
